If you remember the Tom Hanks movie phenom "Cast Away," then you'll probably remember his dynamic co-star "Wilson." Yes, Wilson, the good old volleyball that Tom discovered on the island, drew a make-shift face on, and talked to obsessively on his voyage back home.
Well, my sister and I thought Hanks' Wilson dialogues were quite humorous. So, when the real Wilson sport line came out with a movie-inspired volleyball, my sister bought me one and made me promise to look after dear Wilson the rest of my life. It was a humorous sort of thing, causing us to casually drop in a word or two on behalf of Wilson from time to time.
So, yesterday I called her to let her know that Wilson is nervous about Hurricane Dennis. After all, we joke about his being traumatized on the raft ride with Tom Hanks. Wilson no longer cares for water sports or tropical like weather and he certainly isn't happy with the prospects of a hurricane.
I've had Wilson now for about five years and my sister was surprised to learn that he had recently moved with us from Maryland to Alabama. Wilson is funny that way; he just sort of hangs around for the ride.
My husband and I now join Wilson in being nervous about Hurricane Dennis. As I type, dear hubby is pounding away at some plywood over our kitchen windows. We've had quite a day of barracading the homefront. While the governor mandated that we all evacuate, I had to hang on to the words of the doctor that went something like this: "it's really not a good idea to travel between weeks 24-28." So, we are in official southern terms "hunkering down" with Wilson. I refuse to leave the proximity of a good NICU just in case Gabe should decide to come really early.
Cheers to Wilson...maybe I'll leave him on the front patio and see where life, or shall we say, Dennis takes him...

Joy,
I spent a year in Miami after Andrew hit in 92. Category 4/5 is nothing to mess with. My prayers are with you and your family. Please overdo your preparations (water, cash, generator, batteries) and stay safe. You'll be in be in my thoughts.
