So, I've been asked to share a bit more about our insemination process. Yes, we do the IUI at home. We did our first IUI three months ago in our doctor's office. My darling husband, wanting to be truly involved as much as possible, asked the doctor if he could actually put the 'stuff' in. So, the doctor obliged when I was in position, etc. My husband decided there was nothing to it. When we got home, I headed off to Ebay, for amusement, to see if there were any speculums for sale. Lo and behold, Ebay never fails! I purchased a nice stainless steel speculum for less than $20 and decided we would give it a shot at home the next go round if needed. I also purchased an at-home insemination kit from NW Cryobank which comes with six tom-cat catheters like the doctor used in our first IUI.
Our first go at it was quite hilarious. There I was on the edge of the bed with my husband looking up my nether region with a flashlight. His speculum skills were not very good so I was very uncomfortable. I ended up barking at him and he sheepishly said "I'm sorry honey, it is dark in here!" At that point I started cracking up.
Our second attempt went smoother. Aside from one jerk of the speculum that nearly had me leaping off the table, my husband was able to find my big, gaping wide open cervix and to deliver the 'stuff' to its destination. Hence, we have saved the $110 the doc wants to charge each time and get the pleasure of doing it in our own bedroom. I also prefer it this way as I can wait until the moment of ovulation and shortly thereafter to do our back to back IUI's.
That's the rest of the story...as Paul Harvey would say...

Are you doing intrauterine insemination? I thought the sperm had to be preped and washed for an IUI. Or, are you placing it near the cervix? Thanks for the info.
Hi, yes we are doing them at home. We have stored, prepared, frozen sperm at Fairfax Cryobank. I go and pick it up and we thaw it out for our home insemination. You must have sperm washed for IUI otherwise your uterus would protest severely against the protaglandins and waste. Fairfax freezes the prepared sperm in a eggyolk citrate solution and adds antibiotics to it as well.
