And I spent all that time worrying that he would have growth restriction in utero...

He is indeed a gorgeous big boy!

I've commented on your blog only once or twice but wanted to share something with you that caught my attention (and soon you'll know why). In many of the pictures of your handsome little man, his head is cocked to his left and/or slightly turned to his right.

Now normally, I'd think nothing of this but my own dear girl (now almost 8 months old) did this very same thing just to the opposite side (with a tilt to the right/turn to the left). My daughter's right eye is also slightly asymmetrical from always having her head turned to the left.

We first noticed all of this when she was about 2 months old and mentioned it to one of the pediatricians at our multi-partner practice but he dismissed our concerns.

When my daughter was just over four months old, we saw a different partner at the pediatrician's office who took one look at my girl and diagnosed her with congenital muscular torticollis of her neck. While this sounds scary, it's benign and totally treatable with a bit of physical therapy--which we've been doing for about 3 months now, with great results.

When I saw Gabe's slight tilt/turn, I wondered if he might have a touch of torticollis. While docs don't know the cause of it, it's thought to be from being stuck in one position for a length of time in utero or from a difficult delivery (which was my daughter's case as she arrived with the help of forceps).

I ask that you please don't take my comment the wrong way. Gabe is a gorgeous baby and I have no malice or mean intent in sharing my thoughts with you. I simply wanted to share my own experience because I had been after my daughter's docs for months about this issue--time lost that could have had physical therapy underway long before we actually got it started. Please feel free to e-mail me if you want to know more or want to tell me to mind my own business. I won't take it personally, promise.

Thanks, Dee. We will definitely mention this to the pediatrician next week. We have noticed one eye may be lazier, but we're not sure. He does sleep on both sides--I've watched that as my sister had the habit of turning only one way because of shortened neck muscles. There's always something to worry about!

You're welcome, Joy. Like I said, I just wanted to mention it because if it is something like that (and torticollis is probably the clinical term for what your sister had--as it's essentially a shortened neck muscle that's the cause), it's easily worked with but better if caught early. And sometimes the tilt is actually secondary owing to a problem with vision--i.e., they tilt in order to 'fix' double vision that occurs when they hold their head straight. So one thing we had to do when they started evaluating my daughter was have her visit a pediatric opthalmologist to check her eyes/vision. In her case, the vision wasn't the primary factor in her tilt.

Excellent that Gabe sleeps on both sides (Juliana didn't do that and had some slight plagiocephaly as a result--that is now all but gone).

Thanks for taking my comment the way it was intended. I was worried about mentioning it as I didn't want you to think I was engaging in any kind of mothering 'drive by' or anything negative. I just know that time is precious--and yes, you're right, there is always something to worry about! Good luck and I really enjoy sharing your world in your blog :-)
